PSO LEAGUE: 100 GOOD PRACTICES FOR COMMUNITY

(Work winning 3rd prize in the 22nd Design Competition for Urban Activation)

"Do everything you can." It is a lesson of the lord who once ruled this area. We propose to create an organization, “PSO League,” which allows citizens to devote themselves everything to revitalize the city of Okazaki.

PSO is an abbreviation for Public Spaces for Okazaki. The PSO League is an organization consisting of teams that utilize low-use public spaces in the city. The idea of this league is to "create a cozy, fun, walkable, and beautiful town by having the team members themselves enjoy their activities."

Depending on the type of activity, the number of members, and the size of the activity area, the teams will belong to different divisions. PSO Guide evaluates the activities of the teams in multiple indicators and regularly publishes the results under the title Good Public Spaces for Okazaki.

PSO Guide introduces hot teams on its web site, offers guided tours to experience recommended teams’ activities, and hosts forums to promote interaction between teams.

We propose to set up the headquarter of the league inside the convention center under construction in the middle of the town initially. The activities of the teams will spread and the public spaces will become active with the headquarter as the core.

The followings are images of the public spaces activated by the teams.

TEAM: COFFEE FAMILY
People immigrated from overseas will set up a container in a vacant lot and will welcome people with genuine coffee and food. Through the exchange of several cultures related to beans, they will create a lively atmosphere.

TEAM: OKAZAKI GREENING COMMITTEE

TEAM: LONGEVITY BY MEDICINAL HERB
Hospitals, pharmacies, and pharmaceutical companies in this district will work together to convert vacant lots and flat parkings into medicinal gardens. They will operate them, and hold guided tours, harvesting events, herb seminars, and so on.

TEAM: STAYING IN THE RAIN
This team will set up containers in the open spaces, vacant lots and flat parkings in this district to create places to stay in case of rain. When the area is flooded, they become evacuation boats due to the floating structures.

TEAM: RENOVE
The carpenters will repair vacant houses at the requests of other teams. Floating structures will be installed into the renovated houses in the districts where serious inundation damage may occur. They will create scenery that anyone feels safe.

TEAM: HATCHO HOTEL
Hatcho miso, a traditional ingredient in this area. Barrels for fermenting grains to make hatcho miso will be reused for renovating vacant houses and diverted to the hotel bedrooms. It will be well-received, such as being healed by the scent of miso or feeling good on the skin.
